When attractive lawyer Diana Mitchell meets artist Stephen Burton in front of an intriguing Vermeer painting, they are immediately drawn to each other, and spend several magical days in Vienna, enjoying the festivities and rich cultural life, before she returns to her troubled marriage.
Their romance blossoms into a passionate affair. Yet Diana struggles with her own demons, torn between Stephen and her husband, whose auction house is preparing to sell a newly discovered Vermeer. Stephen, too, wrestles with his own desires towards her, and contemplates how he can make her his own wife.
After a shocking discovery, her husband asserts his claim over Diana’s affections. Complications for their relationship ensue, and Diana and her husband become embroiled in a legal case that captures international attention and threatens to destroy his dreams.
LOVE AND THE ART OF PAINTING edition by Ian Barton Stewart Literature Fiction eBooks
This novel is about a woman and a painting and the men who love them. It is an enthralling story involving the progression of an affair, Old Masters and a nail-biting court case. The main characters (and their dogs!) are likeable and all too human who, in the course of the novel, explore the emotional and moral limits of themselves and each other.Highlights for me include Stephen and Diana's first meeting, the interlude in Venice and the court case. There are also some lyrical love scenes with a bit of sizzle. From the reader's perspective, there is also real tension between one's loyalty to Stephen, as the character introduced at the beginning of the novel, and to Diana's husband Max, who is being betrayed and who is also very appealing.
Although it can be read as a compelling story, the novel also contains some lively debates between the characters on art, music, life and meaning with a variety of perspectives being explored. And just when one is about to think that the author is taking things all too seriously, there is some sly humour or absurdity to enjoy. There are also some lawyers' in-jokes for those in that profession!

LOVE AND THE ART OF PAINTING edition by Ian Barton Stewart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
An exciting first novel from Ian Barton Stewart. Set in Melbourne, Australia, Love and Obsession allows the reader to travel to parts of Europe and New York as we join the characters on their journey. The themes of music and art are woven into the novel guiding the reader through the complicated and enthralling tales of Diana, Stephen, Max and Pete. The characters are interesting and complex; I loved that Diana is far from a stereotypical woman. This novel is a real page turner. I hung on each and every word, not wanting the story to end. I hope Diana, Stephen, Max and Pete appear in a sequel in the not too distant future.
This thrilling novel captures the reader's imagination from beginning to end. Even the well-chosen title, Love and Obsession, attracts attention. And you won't be disappointed--to the contrary! We are enthralled by apt and emphatic conversations about music and painting--an expression of a comprehensible and credible philosophy of life--integrated into a stirring love story. Through his characters, the author speaks to us eloquently, not only with depth but also in a spirit of humour, a spirit compared to that of Mozart.
See for yourself.
